Fishing and Hunting
Fishing and hunting is available throughout the area. Sandhills fresh water lakes teem with bass, crappie, sunfish, perch and pike. Waterfowl season finds these same lakes covered with ducks and geese. The Sandhills provide cover for prairie chicken and grouse while the farmlands are the home to a transplant from China, the pheasant. Native herds of both mule and white tail deer as well as antelope can be found throughout the area. Wild turkey can be hunted in the Pine Ridge area and along the Niobrara River. Contact the Nebraska

The largest grass covered dune sand formation in the world, the sandhills are
home to the cattle baron, the cowboy and the homesteader. It is also the location

Smith Lake, located 25 miles south of Rushville, is designated as a special-use area and has recreational facilities in addition to hunting (in season), fishing and motorboating.
Walgren Lake
Walgren Lake, a state recreation area 14 miles southwest of Rushville, has complete camping and picnicking facilities, rest rooms, drinking water, rowboating, fishing and swimming.
